Ein schneller Geburtstagskaffee um 17:00 Uhr, dann fuhren wir 1800 km nonstop. Um 12:00 Uhr, 19 Stunden später, standen wir auf Picassos Veranda und kauften Garnelen-Sandwiches. Nachtfahrt mit zwei Fahrern, fünf Sandwiches und je drei Litern Wasser, Süßigkeiten, Erdnüssen und einem spannenden Hörbuch. Im Mai ist das Lichterlebnis beeindruckend – wenig Verkehr in der Nacht und ein fantastisches Frühlings-Schweden, das gerade erwacht. Boarding on Stena Germanica at 17:00. In spite of late boarding we still had time for a pre-dinner drink on the top deck by the Yacht Club. From there you we enjoyed a view over Kiel from the 11th floor before the ferry departed at 18:45. We always reserve a window table in the Metropolitan restaurant and enjoy a good meal as the ship leaves port. Our three dogs rest contentedly in our cabin during dinner. Note that there is a limited number of cabins where dogs are allowed, so book early and always opt for a flexible, rebookable ticket. After a nighttime visit to the deck with the dogs so they can do their business, we settle in for the night. After a good night's sleep, we arrive in Gothenburg at 09:15.

When traveling between Switzerland and Sweden, we often take the ferry between Kiel and Gothenburg. When departing from Kiel, we usually allow some extra time for the journey through Germany and often arrive too early. In such cases, we like to take a trip to the beach outside Kiel. Sometimes we visit Timmendorfer Strand, where the promenade is always bustling with people. However, this time we headed to Schwedeneck, a small village north of Kiel with several campsites and a long beach where the dogs can run freely. We hiked the trails above the beach in one direction and returned along the shore. It was a pleasant day before boarding the ferry. We love traveling to Sweden in May. A second spring and often beautiful weather are just two of the reasons. This time, Carl-Henrik went on a short visit with his son Richard. They took the Puttgarden-Rødby and Helsingør-Helsingborg ferries under bright sunshine. There was a stop along the way outside Kristinehamn at Hygns Vilt to stock up on game meat. Then, they retrieved the boat from winter storage and headed to Tallevika for a bonsai inspection and a swim. Wonderful!

Wir sind am Nachmittag losgefahren und haben zwischen Frankfurt und Hannover einen schönen Sonnenuntergang erlebt. In der Nacht passierten wir Norddeutschland und Dänemark und genossen kurz nach der Öresundbrücke einen wunderbaren Sonnenaufgang in Schweden. Während des letzten Teils hatten wir eine schöne Abweichung auf sehr kleinen Straßen entlang des Göta-Kanals, bis wir unser Ziel, Kristinehamn und Tallevika, erreichten. We tested the ferry from Oslo to Kiel when we went back to Switzerland after our short Kristinehamn visit in July. Oslo is only 3 hours’ drive from Kristinehamn, the same distance as Göteborg but with less traffic. I, Carl-Henrik is not a big fan of Oslo but if you have never been there, it is worth a visit. The Colorline Ferries are more like cruise ships than ferries. A lot to do, eat and drink onboard. Good quality offers compared to all otherer ferries but bad if you bring animals. No animal cabins and animals only allowed in special boxes on car deck. Max three visits to your animal during 24 hours for an awful walk on car deck so very few dogs onboard. Wir haben die Fähre von Oslo nach Kiel getestet, als wir nach unserem kurzen Kristinehamn-Besuch im Juli zurück in die Schweiz fuhren. Oslo ist nur 3 Autostunden von Kristinehamn entfernt, genauso weit wie Göteborg, aber mit weniger Verkehr. Ich, Carl-Henrik, bin kein großer Fan von Oslo, aber wenn Sie noch nie dort waren, ist es einen Besuch wert. Die Colorline Ferries ähneln eher Kreuzfahrtschiffen als Fähren. Viel zu tun, zu essen und zu trinken an Bord. Gute Qualitätsangebote im Vergleich zu allen anderen Fähren, aber schlecht, wenn Sie Tiere mitbringen. Keine Tierkabinen und Tiere nur in speziellen Boxen auf dem Autodeck erlaubt. Maximal drei Besuche bei Ihrem Tier innerhalb von 24 Stunden für einen schrecklichen Spaziergang auf dem Autodeck. Verließ die Schweiz und Deutschland mit einer etwas feuchten Wetterprognose und nicht besonders warm. Hier in Värmland ist es über 20 Grad und Sonnenschein von 4:30 bis 21:30 Uhr. Dann geht es schnell mit dem Grün. Es ist etwas unwirklich mit einem so fantastischen zweiten Frühling, aber wir danken und nehmen es gerne an. Then the greenery quickly takes over. It's somewhat unreal to experience such a fantastic second spring, but we are grateful for it and gladly embrace it.

In winter, it's better to take the ferry if the weather is bad. Gothenburg is always cold and windy in winter, but a short walk along the beach by the ferry is still a must, and the dogs need their exercise. Once on board and with the dogs settled in the cabin, we head to the bar and restaurant, where we always reserve a window table in the Metropolitan restaurant. Then it's straight to bed, as there's a long drive ahead tomorrow, about 1,000 km.
